Sadly, it’s a tool found in almost everyteams bat bag around the country: The Heavy Bat.I know, I know, you’re saying to yourself “Jon, Major Leaguer XYZ uses theheavy bat. And after I use the heavy bat my regular bat feels so light. Soyou’re full of it!”Believe who you may, but just because your favorite Major Leaguer uses aheavy bat doesn’t mean you should. And just because your game bat “feels”light after swinging the heavy bat, doesn’t mean you can swing it faster. In fact, I guarantee that if you swing the heavy bat then swing your gamebat and have your bat speed measured, it would be SLOWER than if you justswung your regular bat to warm-up! Happens every time, even though thehitter says, “But my bat feels lighter!”Just like you can teach your body to be faster, you can teach it to beslower…And while a heavy bat is just fine to loosen-up your joints before youswing, if used in a non-swinging manner, it will not only slow down your batspeed but it will screw up your mechanics.It’s a fact. Any object 15% heavier or more than your game bat will alteryour normal swing mechanics. So, in fact, when you’re swinging the heavy batyou’re engraining poor swing habits that are VERY difficult to break. And,most youth hitters I see do not have the strength to even handle a bat 5%heavier than their normal game bat.Besides, most pro’s don’t swing the heavy bat as they do a regular game bat.They simply use the heavy bat in a non-swinging manner to loosen up theirjoints, as mentioned above.So do yourself a favor, stop swinging the heavy bat in hopes of making yourbat speed faster.
